Myeong-dong is one of the primary shopping districts in Seoul. The two main drags meet in the center of the block with one beginning from Myeong-dong Subway Station (Seoul Subway Line No. 4) and the other from Lotte Department Store at Euljiro. Many brand name shops and department stores line the streets and alleys. Common products for sale include clothes, shoes, and accessories. Haneulmulbit (Institute of traditional natural dyeing) is a private institute of traditional natural dyeing founded by Jo Suhyeon, an expert in traditional Korean knotting and dyeing. Visitors can appreciate a wide collection of finely dyed beautiful fabrics, threads and embroidered artworks. The institute also runs various subject related classes and open workshops for the public, in order to promote understanding of the significance of traditional Korean natural dyeing, including knotting and embroidery, which has impacted on every aspect of Korean art and culture. The institute is also close to BukchonHanok Village, which is a living example of traditional Korean culture, comprising over 900 traditional Korean houses and still reflecting the Korean lifestyle.
This is street of Korean traditional culture with antique art and book shops, traditional teahouses and craft shops. It is one of Seoul’s leading gallery streets and has been the location of many art galleries since olden times. With its wooden tea houses, boutique galleries and street vendors selling traditional snacks, a stroll through Insa-dong is mandatory for all visitors, especially on Sundays when the streets become traffic free and come alive with street performances, buskers and throngs of young and old who have come to experience one of Seoul’s most fascinating and creative neighborhoods. While the entertainment here is free, Insa-dong is also one of the best places in Seoul to purchase traditional Korean art, products, and other souvenirs, as it is filled with antique shops, art galleries, traditional stationery shops, handicraft shops, pottery and porcelain shops, bookstores, and art supply stores. Insa-dong is also home to many traditional restaurants and teahouses.
