About 2,000 old Korean kitchen utensils and tteok (rice cake) related items are displayed here and arranged by various themes. The displayed utensils are handmade household necessities that are ingenuous, yet reveal the lifestyle of the working class. The elderly may relive fond childhood memories and the younger generation can experience the wisdom of ancestors through the rare kitchen utensils.
This is street of Korean traditional culture with antique art and book shops, traditional teahouses and craft shops. It is one of Seoul’s leading gallery streets and has been the location of many art galleries since olden times. With its wooden tea houses, boutique galleries and street vendors selling traditional snacks, a stroll through Insa-dong is mandatory for all visitors, especially on Sundays when the streets become traffic free and come alive with street performances, buskers and throngs of young and old who have come to experience one of Seoul’s most fascinating and creative neighborhoods. While the entertainment here is free, Insa-dong is also one of the best places in Seoul to purchase traditional Korean art, products, and other souvenirs, as it is filled with antique shops, art galleries, traditional stationery shops, handicraft shops, pottery and porcelain shops, bookstores, and art supply stores. Insa-dong is also home to many traditional restaurants and teahouses.
Gyeongbokgung was the first royal palace built by the Joseon Dynasty, three years after the Joseon Dynasty was founded. Built in 1395, Gyeongbokgung was located at the heart of newly appointed capital of Seoul (then known as Hanyang) and represented the sovereignty of the Joseon Dynasty. The largest of the Five Grand Palaces (the others being Gyeonghuigung, Deoksugung, Changgyeonggung, Changdeokgung), Gyeongbokgung served as the main palace of the Joseon Dynasty.
The National Palace Museum of Korea is a place where visitors can learn about the cultural life and possessions of the royal families from the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910). The museum was rebuilt in 2005 in the precinct of Gyeongbokgung (Palace) in order to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Korea's independence. It houses over 40,000 artifacts from the palaces of the Joseon Dynasty. The museum is divided into three themed galleries, one for each floor of the museum: royal childbirth and education (1st floor); royal symbols and records (2nd floor); and royal court painting, musical instruments and ceremonial objects used in royal procession (B1).
